NCAA REPORT: “Senior second baseman Jace Williams strode to the plate with the bases loaded and two outs as No. 1 California trailed No. 3 Washington 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday at Levine-Fricke Field.

“Facing UW hurler Kaitlin Inglesby, who had given up just one hit prior to the seventh inning and had not lost a game all year, Williams worked to a 2-2 count before roping the ball fair down the left-field line. On contact, Frani Echavarria came home from third to score the game-tying run. Jamia Reid rounded third and sprinted for home, racing the throw from left. Reid slid into the dish around the tag, scoring the game-winning run.

“With the 2-1 win in hand, the Bears literally jumped for joy, crowding around home plate to celebrate.”

Pitching, defense keeps scoring low 

as two state ranked HS teams collide

Two of the top MD state ranked high school softball teams faced each other last Tuesday.

A close game was expected, and that is exactly what was delivered as the No. 4 Seton Keough Gators overcame the No. 3 Archbishop Spalding Cavaliers by a score of 1-0.

► Pitching is outstanding...

Sara Conboy

The single run of the game crossed the plate in the first inning. Then, catcher Kelsie Traylor, crouched behind the plate, and pitcher, Bailey Rouck, in the circle, settled down to retire 16 of the next 17 batters.

Off the school diamond, Archbishop Spaldings' catcher Kelsie Traylor and second base player Sara Conboy also cover their infield positions on the Harford Xtreme Showcase travel-ball team. For the Cavaliers, Sara and Kelsie bat two and three in the lineup.

Through seven innings of Tuesday's game, Bailey and Kelsie exchanged only 84 pitches between them and a Gator batter, while this battery faced more than four hitters only in the first.

Now Seton Keough's Robi Zimmermann was ultra-effective, too. She took a no-hitter into the fifth before Bailey ended it with a double.

► Defense is sharp...

Defense on both sides contributed to the low scoring contest. Kelsie made a diving catch on a pop-up in front of the plate to start the second.

In the seventh, Seton Keough's Hannah Tavik let off with another double, but ended up caught between home and third, when Kelsie dove to tag her out in a one throw rundown. The next batter grounded out to end the six-pitch top of the final inning.

► Rivalry continues...

Seton Keough has lost to Archbishop Spalding in each of the last two Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference finals. It was a different result this past week, however, if just by a single run in the first inning.

The inning doubled Florida's total runners left on base in the game, as the Gators had multiple runners on base just twice in the game...

“Salisbury (19-5) took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of a bases loaded situation created by senior Casey Zaino's and junior Lindsay Brown's (Ellicott City, Md) singles along with sophomore Molly Gigioli's (Laurel, Md) hit by pitch. The first run of the inning was scored due to a Cardinal fielding error, allowing Zaino to touch home and junior Carly Read (Catonsville, Md) to beat the throw to first, keeping the bases loaded.

"Sophomore Sarah Alpaugh (Eldersburg, Md) was hit by a pitch to earn an RBI, allowing Brown to cross home and maintain runners on all bases. With one out, Brittingham hit her first sacrifice fly of the season, bringing Gigioli home and giving the Gulls a 3-0 edge going into the third inning.

"SU would further its lead to 5-0 until the Cardinals managed three runs in the top of the sixth inning off of two homers from Amy Laughner and Taylor Stockinger, closing the gap to 5-3. The Gulls defense, however, kept any additional runs from crossing home plate to earn the narrow victory.

 
"Game two saw a similar start as Salisbury took the early lead, 2-0, in the first inning...

"Freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson (Preston, Md) (7-2) got the start but was relieved in the top of the second inning by sophomore Kathryn Larson (Frederick, Md). Larson kept the Cardinals off the bases until Taylor Stockinger hit her second homer of the day, allowing Catholic to retake the lead...

"The contest would remain a battle as the score remained in Catholic's favor while the Gulls chipped away. Zaino drove home junior Hannah Mills (Parksley, Md) ... in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-6 before SU's bats erupted in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring six runs off three hits. Junior Michelle Gravdahl (Ellicott City, Md) came up with the big hit of the inning, a two-run double to center field, scoring Alpaugh and Read to give Salisbury the final lead change of the day.

"Johnson, who re-entered in the top of the sixth inning, pitched a perfect seventh inning to end the game 12-7, earning her seventh win of the season with five strikeouts, one walk, and three runs off five hits.
