.339 career average
Galindo approaches
Terps all-time hits leader

University of Maryland's left fielder Vangie Galindo is seven hits away from setting the Terps’ all-time career hits mark.

The following is the beginning of a much longer story online by Jason Benscher in the DIAMONDBACKONLINE, The University of Maryland's independent daily student newspaper.

“It’s so repetitive. It’s been done so many times, it’s almost robotic. A short, compact swing lines a single past the shortstop. A flick of the wrists punches the ball into center. A perfect bunt deadens it in front of home plate.

“In the blink of an eye, there’s a runner on first.

“To some, those base hits might seem boring, unexciting. But the slap-hitting repetition has worked for Vangie Galindo quite a bit — 213 times, to be exact.

“'I think out of nowhere,' she said, 'slapping just came about.'

“It’s been that way for the Terrapins left fielder since her early teenage years, and she’s parlayed into success at a major college program. Galindo’s .339 career average is the highest in school history by a wide margin. She already owns the single-season records for most hits and highest average. And if she can amass seven hits before the season ends, she’ll pass Jenny Belak as the program’s all-time hits leader.”
