Press clippings about hometown Maryland players...

Shari Beavers
"The Frostburg State softball team broke open a close contest with a nine-run third inning to defeat Hood, 13-3, in the second game of the Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. Hood defeated the Bobcats, 13-4, in game one.

"The top of the third of game two started with the Bobcats ahead, 3-2. They led off by loading the bases without the ball leaving the infield. Junior Shari Beavers (Cumberland, Md) and senior Beth Whitehead (Jessup, Md) each reached on infield singles surrounding a Bailey Ellsworth (Mt. Savage, Md) hit by pitch. Senior Jordan Wright (East New Market, Md) singled in a run and junior Taylor Vandegrift grounded out to bring home a run to make it 5-2.

Caitlin Lovend
"After junior Kerri O'Malley (Baltimore, Md) reached on a dropped third strike to score Whitehead, junior Caitlin Lovend (Laurel, Md) hit a three-run homer to make it 9-2 and freshman Amanda Hennessee (Hampstead, Md) went back-to-back to move the score to 10-2.

"Beavers singled for the second time in the inning and scored on an Ellsworth double along with junior Megan Butzner (Pasadena, Md) to cap the inning at 12-3.

"The Bobcats used RBI singles from Lovend, Beavers and Ellsworth to score three runs in the top of the first. Hood answered back with two of its own in the bottom half, but the third inning put the game out of reach.

"Lovend and Ellsworth each had four RBIs and Beavers went 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Wright benefited from the offensive surge as she won her 11th game of the year.

"Lovend and Wright hit homers in the first game of the afternoon, but it wasn't enough as the Blazers broke open a three-run game with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to invoke the mercy rule and win, 13-4."
