Player profile
Haley Stueckler's collegiate  softball path: unconventional

Press clippings about hometown Maryland college players...

"When the Tiger softball team opened up Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play against Delaware on March 24, it was raining and the game’s start time had already been pushed back... The conditions that weekend were less than perfect, but the Tigers walked out of the series 2-1...

"Anywhere you looked that weekend no matter the circumstances, was senior Haley Stueckler (Huntington, Md).

"She was doing the little things, and at times she was one of the only players for either side who didn’t seem to have her spirit washed away with the rain. The second-basemen recorded three hits, three walks, had 11 put-outs and seven assists in the series. In game one, she had one of only two total team hits, scoring the only run in the Tigers’ 1-0, win...

"Stueckler spent her freshman year at Tallahassee Community College, where she played shortstop and second-base... Recruited as a pitcher and middle infielder, Stueckler wanted to transfer to a school that would give her flexibility to play the infield.

“'I wanted something that would give me options,” she said. “Thankfully, that happened because now I don’t like pitching.”

Haley Stueckler
“... Stueckler entered her sophomore year as essentially a walk-on with little expectation to play. It was hard for her to go from captain and starter to become a Tiger and “be a rookie again.” Then last season, Stueckler broke her thumb two weeks into the year, relegating her to cheering from the dugout and the occasional pitch hit at-bat.

“Going from starting every game my freshman year to watching most of the games my sophomore and junior years, I’m definitely more understanding of different roles, whether it is because you’re hurt or not getting the chances,” Stueckler said.

By the time the 2012 campaign rolled around, Stueckler was ready to prove herself, even after a slow start offensively.

“I figured I’d be a leader, more of a leader on the field than a vocal leader,” Stueckler said of her pre-season expectations. “My role is to set an example of working hard and doing what you are supposed to do. To just be someone that pushes everyone else to go for that ball that they may think is out of their range.”

“Stay late, come early and just try to be a motivator, “she added.

“This season, Stueckler has started 34 of 39 games for the Tigers, amassing 69 at-bats, only five shy of her previous two seasons at Towson combined. She has 15 hits, a season-high as a Tiger, and scored 14 runs. She also has three doubles and two home-runs, batting in six runs. Stueckler has reached base on balls 11 times and been hit by the pitch four times. Her on-base percentage of .357 is good enough for fourth best on the team.”
