Build A Better Athlete
Nutritional guidelines

The website ESPNHS (High School Sports) has a new series of articles and videos titled “Build A Better Athlete”. The first Wednesday of every month features nutrition advice. Below are links to the 2012 January and February stories. (See also ChooseMyPlate.gov for the national USDA initiative.)

START 2012 RIGHT with healthy eating ideas from University of Virginia director of sports nutrition RandyBird...

Randy Bird
Water, nonfat milk, fruits and vegetables are most important, says Randy Bird, to improve brain and muscle function, ward off illness and protect body from effects of physical and emotional stress. The nutrients in nuts he contends are “vital for optimal wellness.” Top choices: almonds and walnuts. “But,” he adds “any nut would be beneficial.”

He cautions about the vast number of “unregulated energy drinks” as well as the sugar in soda that “will increase body fat, which can decrease speed, endurance and explosiveness and increases risk for injury.” Of course, he is not a fan of “fast food, specifically french fries, fried chicken patties, fried chicken nuggets and hamburgers.”

On the other hand, Randy Bird asserts “eggs have definitely gotten a bad rap... Eggs provide the highest quality protein found in any food.” Eating eggs after exercise also help “muscle tissue repair and growth.” After running the saturated and trans fat numbers on eggs, he maintains “You can safely enjoy an egg a day without worrying about your cholesterol.”

EATING ON THE GO, tips from renowned chef Emeril Lagasse...

 World-renowned chef Emeril Lagasse
“Keep it simple, keep it fresh” is Emeril's advice. “Stay away from all that processed stuff”.

Whole wheat toast, scambled eggs, quality sandwich, and pasta for dinner is fine as long as you are reading labels to ensure you are limiting “sodium and junk “.

Cookies for dessert!, he recommends – avoiding “dense stuff... those heavy brownies, those big pieces of cake.”

Of course, vegetables play a central role, too. “ Vegetables are key, especially when you're young and trying to develop those muscles and strength.”

As for spices, “I can't tell you enough about cinnamon”, he says. “Cinnamon is an awesome spice to use and it goes great with something like apples in the morning or in a mixture of fruit or in your oatmeal or even in your cereal.”

● “IT’S UNFAIR” DALTON RUER INSISTS about a slapper's advantage. “Really it’s like stealing when you think about it,” he writes at Fastpitch.tv. If a slapper makes contact with the ball with her left foot as far forward as legally allowed – that is, the left heel in batters box, but rest of foot crossing the line – left toe is about 54' 3” from first base. Meanwhile, a right hand hitter is actually about 61' 2.5” distant. Difference = getting close to 7 ft, or, at least, 10% less distance to run!
