One-hitters, rallies, HRs, more

PLAYERS, COACHES, FAMILY, FRIENDS: There is not enough time or space at this blog to cover every hometown Marylander playing college softball. If you know of a recent outstanding performance not reported here, please write us about it at xtremeshowcaseblog@gmail.com. Your input is very welcome.

These reports all from DI, DII games played yesterday, Sunday, March 4, 2012...
Katie Ferguson

ONE-HITTER: The UMBC Retrievers split a doubleheader, shutting out the Niagara Purple Eagles, 1-0, and falling in extra innings, 10-4, to the Iona College Gaels.

In game one, senior pitcher Katie Ferguson, North East, Md, shutout the Purple Eagles by throwing a complete game one-hitter to pick up her second win of the year. Ferguson recorded 8 strikeouts and did not allow a base runner beyond first.

Kaela Mason

"Katie pitched a gem," said head coach Joe French

The game was the definition of a pitchers’ dual, with the two teams combining for only three hits with Junior outfielder Kaela Mason, Bel Air, Md, contributing a single.

Jessica Warner

In game two, the two teams pounded out 21 combined hits and 14 runs. Senior third base Jessica Warner, Huntingtown, Md, hit a three-run home run, her first of the year and sixth of her career.

Heather Brown

Junior pitcher Heather Brown, Pasadena, Md, only allowed three earned runs over seven plus innings of work.

DRAMATIC RALLY: The Coppin Eagles trailed 3-1 against the Canisius Golden Griffins before staging a spectacular rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pitcher Tiffani Whaley, White Plain, Md, set it up nicely when she slammed a single with a runner on to put Eagles on the corners with no outs. Both would scored as Coppin snapped a three-game losing streak.
