D1 Saturday games
Surprise wins & losses

PLAYERS, COACHES, FAMILY, FRIENDS: There is not enough time or space at this blog to cover every hometown Marylander playing college softball. If you know of a recent outstanding performance not reported here, please write us about it at xtremeshowcaseblog@gmail.com. Your input is very welcome.

TWO AMAZING WINS: The Seton Hall Pirates managed only a single, not even one walk, against the Illinois Fighting Illini, but it was enough for a 1-0 victory. The hit that broke up what might have been a no-hitter came from sophomore catcher Meredith Henze, Elkton, Md

The winning run, however, arrived in the first when errors put runners on the corners and a double-steal delivered the only score needed. CLICK HERE for box score.

In an earlier game, the Pirates struck for another 1-0 victory against the New Mexico State Aggies. This time the team's offense recorded just three hits and no walks, but, again, enough for the win.

AWESOME PERFORMANCE, BUT NO “W”: Sophomore shortstop Kourtney Salvarola, Arnold, Md, punched out a 2-for-3 day with a double, a triple, a walk, an RBI, and a run scored. She almost tied the game for a possible comeback victory with her hard hit two-base shot.

The following paragraphs are from the USF Bulls website...

“Eight inches. It's the difference between sophomore shortstop Kourtney Salvarola's laser-shot double off the fence in left and what could have been a game-tying home run for the University of South Florida softball team Saturday night.

Kourtney Salvarola
“Eight inches was all that separated the Bulls from what would have been their third 7th-inning comeback of the season, as USF (12-3 overall, 0-0 BIG EAST) fell just short to Loyola Marymount 6-4...

“'We fought back and I think we showed some heart,' Salvarola said. 'We're not exactly thrilled right now, but that's softball. It's a game of inches and it just happened to not go our way today.'"

Sam Pugh

HR SEALS VICTORY: The Rider Broncs handed the host George Mason Patriots a loss when junior catcher Sam Pugh, Elkton, Md, walloped a two-run home run for the final score. Sam was 1-for-3 with 2 RBIs.

Freshman second base Amanda Irving, Westminster, Md, walked and also scored a run.

Melanie Mitchell

15 Ks NOT ENOUGH: Junior pitcher Melanie Mitchell, White Plains, Md, notched 15 strikeouts, allowed just one earned run, and walked one batter. But, she lost as the Virginia Cavaliers fell to the Syracuse Orange 3-1.

Patrice Williams

4 HITS STAND OUT: Coppin State Eagles sophomore outfielder Patrice Williams, Baltimore, Md, had four hits on Saturday, but it wasn't enough to stop the Fairleigh Dickinson Knights from picking up two wins for the day on Coppin's home field.
