Weekend game action

PLAYERS, COACHES, FAMILY, FRIENDS: There is not enough time or space at this blog to cover every hometown Marylander playing college softball. 27 RUNS: Senior Erika Stasch, Pasadena, Md, belted a home run for the Towson Tigers, who scored 27 runs in the three-game sweep of Columbia. In the first game, Erika slammed a bases-loaded double that cleared the bases and put the Tigers in front 12-0. Erika was 5-for-6 with 2 walks, 6 RBI, 6 runs scored in the trio of contests.

  SCORELESS INNINGS: The George Mason Patriots fell to Hartford 3-0. All runs were scored before Patriot’s freshman relief pitcher Tiffany Harvell, Bowie, Md, entered the game in the first inning to pitch six scoreless innings, scattering just three hits.

KEY DOUBLE: The Wilmington University Wildcats swept a doubleheader with a game one win, 5-4, over American International and a 5-3 victory over Mercy College. Senior catcher Amanda Crocket, North East, Md, had a key double in a sixth inning rally for the Wildcats.

FIRST COLLEGE WIN: The Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers picked up a 6-2 win against Niagara. Freshman Danni Cummings, Owings, Md, threw a complete game, allowing one earned run, to earn her first collegiate win. 

Freshman Holly Buckel, Finksburg, Md, added three hits, two runs scored and an RBI while junior Erin Leddy, Great Mills, Md, posted two hits, two runs scored and an RBI on the afternoon.

In a second game, the Coppin State Eagles came from behind to clip The Mount by a score of 4-3. The Eagles began their comeback with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Tiffani Whaley, White Plain, Md, after two runs had scored, laced a double that plated a third run.

DOUBLE SWEEP: The Goldey-Beacom Lightning swept a doubleheader from the Briarcliffe College Seahawks. Senior pitcher Shannon O'Hara, LaPlata, Md, started for the second game with a solid pitching performance. Shannon threw six strong innings, allowing two hits and one run while sitting down five batters by strikeouts.

CATCHER CONTRIBUTES: The No. 25 Shenandoah University Hornets suffered its second loss in three games with a 2-0 defeat to Lynchburg. Junior catcher Denise Mitchell, Ellicott City, Md, was 2-for-4 on the day

10TH WIN: The Virginia Cavaliers swept 2011 ACC regular season champion Georgia Tech yellow Jackets. It was the first time Tech had been swept in conference play since April 2008.

Junior pitcher Melanie Mitchell, White Plains, Md, picked up her 10th win of the year. She limited the Yellow Jackets to one run on five hits and struck out five.

SHE’S 3-FOR-3: Mercyhurst swept the Shepherd University Rams in doubleheader. The Lakers grabbed a 3-2 win in game one and added a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap.

In game one, Shepherd took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning in game one behind a two-run single off the bat of freshman outfielder Tayler Schaefer, Dunkirk, Md. Schaefer went 3-for-3 to lead the Rams.

In game two, the Rams tied the game in the third from a RBI-single off the bat of freshman designated player Savannah Snyder, Elkton, Md.

SHUTOUT: The Maryland Terrapins blanked Kent State, 5-0, Sunday at Robert E. Taylor Stadium, behind two doubles from Senior catcher, outfielder Sloane Van Meter, Hanover, Md. Sophomore catcher Kelly Trimble, Laurel, Md, also blasted a double in the win.

DROPS TWO: The UMBC Retrievers lost both of its games, 3-2 to Niagara, and 5-2 to Seton Hall.

In game one, Retriever junior Heather Brown, Pasadena, Md, worked seven innings, striking out 3 with 3 earned runs.

In game two, the Retrievers scored first when sophomore Jessica Warner, Huntingtown, Md, doubled down the left field line, advanced to third on a single and came home on a wild pitch. Senior tarting pitcher Katie Ferguson, North East, Md, was the victim of defensive errors as she only gave up two earned runs on six hits over seven innings.

INSIDE PARK HR: Senior second base Jordan Reid, Accokeek, Md, legged out a two-RBI inside the park home run as the Delaware State University Yellow Jackets picked up a 4-2 victory over the University of North Florida.

Senior outfielder Chelsea Stern, Owings, Md, was hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning and Reid followed with her race around the bases

RBI UNANSWERED: The Washington College Shorewomen defeated Defiance, 6-1.

The Shorewomen added their second run, which would be all that was needed, in the top of third when freshman designated player Kelsey Graham, Dunkirk, Md, led off the inning with a double and scored on a double by sophomore catcher Kylie Nottingham, Ocean City, Md.

The Shorewomen extended the lead to 4-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman shortstop Suzanne Patinella, Fallston, Md, doubled to lead off the inning and later scored on an error. Junior center fielder Lindsey Glascock, Glenwood, Md, drove in the Shorewomen's fourth run with an RBI fielder's choice.

In the top of the seventh, junior second baseman Shaelan Nottingham, Ocean City, Md, plated an RBI with a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 6-0.

Junior pitcher Brittany Walter, Forest Hill, Md, pitched the first six innings for the Shorewomen and got the win. Walter allowed no runs on three hits and two walks while striking out two batters.

THREE WINS, THREE 2Bs: The West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets took three games from visiting Hillsdale. Senior Brittany Hyatt, Hagerstown, Md, banged out three doubles.

PITCHING SECURES IT: The Bees from the Savannah College of Art and Design slipped by Findlay 2-1 on superb pitching by freshman Sydnee Schorr, Easton, Md. Sydnee struck out 4, allowed 4 hits and one earned run in the complete game thrown.

PITCHING WINS IT: The Drexel Dragons scratched out a 1-0 victory in 8 innings against Evansville. Starter sophomore pitcher Shelby Taylor, Easton, Md, had 5 strikeouts over 5 innings.

 

  




ANOTHER NO-HITTER: The No. 9 Salisbury University Sea Gulls split a pair of games, hitting three home runs against D'Youville College, 4-0, and falling to Wilkes University, 2-1. One of the dingers came from the bat of junior catcher Michelle Gravdahl, Ellicott City, Md.

In the first game, senior pitcher Erika Brittingham (7-2) picked up a no-hitter, her SECOND in as many days!

In the final game, freshman pitcher Rachel Johnson, Preston, Md, went 5 2/3 on the mound for the Gulls. She struck out 10 in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Kathryn Larson, Frederick, Md, came in to relieve in the fifth inning to strike out a pinch hitter with the bases loaded.

SEESAW WIN: The Stevenson University Mustangs defeated future MAC rival Wilkes Colonials 5-4 in a game played last Friday.

The Mustangs got on the board first with a two-run double by senior Kristin Urban, Timonium, Md, in the bottom of the third. She finished the game with a career-high three RBIs.

 After the Colonels tied the game, the Mustangs regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-double by freshman Stephanie Ayres, Upper Marlboro, Md, which was followed by a sacrifice fly to go ahead 4-3.

The Colonials came back again, but senior Lisa Bilski, Forest Hill, Md, was knocked home as the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth.

Senior Brittany King, Bel Air, Md, went 2-for-3 while Urban was 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
