Some wins, some tough loses
Hometown MDers play hard

Autumn Taylor

More action from hometown Maryland players in Friday's games on the college circuit...

COLONIALS: The George Washington Colonials lost a tough 6-5 decision to Buffalo Bulls. Junior outfielder Autumn Taylor, Severna Park, Md, kept it close, however, going 2-for-4 on the day with a run scored and a RBI double belted to the opposite field.

MOUNTAINEERS & DE HORNETS: The Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers triumphed 4-3 over the Delaware State University Hornets, who lost both ends of their double header, also falling 2-0 to the McNeese State Cowgirls. Later The Mount could not overcome the no hit pitching of the St. Bonaventure Bonnies.

For the Delaware Hornets, senior second base Jordan Reid, Accokeek, Md, back-to-back MEAC Player of the Year, hit 3-for-6, twice smacking hard hit doubles against the Cowgirls.

MUSTANGS: The Stevenson University Mustangs were without a hit yesterday going into the seventh against the Meredith Avenging Angels

Then, sophomore Lindsay Kuczak, Bel Air, Md, sent a one-out shot to left, which was the Mustangs only hit of the game in a 1-0 loss. The Avenging Angels only managed two hits themselves.

Katie Ferguson

RETRIEVERS: The UMBC Retrievers downed the Princetown Tigers 7-2 behind the windmill arm of senior pitcher Katie Ferguson, North East, Md, who threw a complete game to pick up her first win of the year. Katie yielded only two earned runs on eight hits, while striking out five Tigers. She also slammed out her own hit at the plate.

Jessica Warner

In the first inning, the Retrievers were scoring when senior catcher, first base Angela Yannone, Pasadena, Md, was hit by a pitch and sophomore second base, utility Caitlin Chance, Easton, Md, was forced home.

Three hometown Marylanders had a hit with an RBI: Caitlin Chance, senior third base Jessica Warner, Huntingtown, Md, and freshman utility Mary Hartman, Eldersburg, Md, who had a double and two RBIs.

SHOREWOMEN: The Washington College Shorewomen battled the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders back and forth through seven innings in the afternoon, but finally lost 7-4. However, a combo Shorewomen pitching team of senior Jill Piaseckior, Galena, Md, and junior Brittany Walter, Forest Hill, Md, only allowed one earned run! Brittany struck out five Scarlet Raiders in five innings.

Shaelan Nottingham
Junior second base Shaelan Nottingham, Ocean City, Md, socked a two-run home run to centerfield to send herself and sister sophomore catcher Kylie Nottingham, Ocean City, Md, home in the bottom of the second. The blast tie the game at 2-2. Kylie, 2-for-3 on the day, would score twice more in later innings on singles by freshman DH Suzanne Patinella, Fallston, Md and by her sister again, Shaelan Nottingham, who also was 2-for-3 along with 3 RBIs and the aforementioned dinger.

Kristin Cooper
SPECIAL NOTE: In the Shorewomen's night game, freshman pitcher, outfielder Kristin Cooper struck out 13 Randolph WildCats in her collegiate pitching debut as Washington College won 9-5.

Kristin is not a hometown Marylander, but hails, oh so close, from the Eastern Shore's nearby Georgetown, Delaware.

Kristin struck out the side in the bottom of the second and fourth innings and fanned at least one WildCat in every inning, but the third. She is the first Shorewoman to strike out 10 or more batters in a game since 2004.

Suzanne Patinella
In this game, four hometown Marylanders scored runs for the Shorewomen.

They were... junior second base Shaelan Nottingham, Ocean City, Md, junior outfielder, pitcher Brittany Walter, Forest Hill, Md, junior shortstop Lindsey Glascock, Glenwood, Md, and Sophomore catcher Kylie Nottingham, Ocean City, Md, who scored on an infield single by freshman Suzanne Patinella, Fallston, Md, that pushed the Shorewomen into the lead.

Brittany Willingham

For the WildCats, junior outfielder Brittany Willingham, Glen Burnie, Md, was 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored, a walk, and an RBI.
